Programme

This advanced class is
live-streamed or in-person

What you will learn:

  • Basic properties of hydrogen.
  • Hydrogen markets and infrastructures.
  • Comparative risk of hydrogen and other fuels (such as petrol, diesel, natural gas).
  • Effects of hydrogen releases, ignited and unignited.
  • Hydrogen explosions.
  • Hydrogen embrittlement of steels.
  • Examples of fuel incidents (petrol, methanol, natural gas, and hydrogen compared).
  • Safe handling of hydrogen in laboratories and workshops.
  • Regulations, codes, and standards referring to hydrogen safety.

Course description

Learn about the properties and behaviour of hydrogen as an energy vector and chemical raw material in industry. Hear about how to safely handle hydrogen in a laboratory, workshop or your hydrogen project.

Understand the differences in risk between conventional and hydrogen fuels. Where does hydrogen introduce new risks and where does it resolve old ones? What regulations hold for hydrogen installations and what are the general processes to receive operating permits.

Who is this course for?

The course addresses post-graduate students, academics and professionals working on hydrogen projects.

It will allow you to better assess the issues of handling hydrogen in your projects.

And it will give you the arguments to use in permitting discussions. On both sides of the table.

Below you can download the complete programme for our event's live-steamed and in-person versions. For those attending the live-streamed lectures, please note that they will only be available during the provided date and time slot and that no recordings of the live sessions will be available afterwards, except the ones marked as "video".
All times are listed in local Athens time (CE(S)T+ 1:00h).
We look forward to seeing you there!

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is The History Of JESS?

The Joint European Summer School (JESS) is an annual event that has been running since 2004. Initially focused on solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology within the EU-project Real-SOFC, the summer school expanded its scope in 2010 to include low temperature fuel cells, batteries and electrolysers. Since 2010, the summer school has been organised in its current format as the 'Joint European Summer School'. JESS is jointly organised by the University of Birmingham, Research Centre Jülich, the University of Aachen, and the Technical University of Denmark. It primarily targets university students, post-doctoral researchers, and professionals looking to enhance their knowledge and skills in the field of fuel cell, electrolyser, and battery applications.
